Farewell 2008, Happy New Year 2009!

With 2008 a memory and the dawn of 2009, everyone at Maravia would like to express their appreciation to all those who contributed to the great success experienced by Maravia in 2008.

The friendship, combined with professionalism, has demonstrated, without question, that great things do happen when friends (owners, staff, contractors and officials) work together for common goals.
Thank you very much.

Maravia Milestone - Subdivision II infrastructure construction begins December 15, 2008

Oxford American dictionaries defines Infrastructure as "the basic physical and organizational structures and facilities (e.g. buildings, roads and power supplies) needed for the operation of a society or enterprise". On Monday, December 15, 2008 construction began on the infrastructure of Maravia's "Phase II," a $25,000,000ºº addition known as"The Ridge at Maravia," which will include all underground utilities and pure drinking water from Maravia's state-of-the-art desalination purification plant.

Views from The Ridge are breathtaking; there are golf views, beach views, mountain views and seemingly endless views of the Sea of Cortez that are only broken by even more majestic views of Isla Espiritu Santos and Isla Cerralvo.

Numerous custom homes are now complete and more are under construction in Subdivision I (
click here for map of Subdivisions I and II). Water lines are in (wells will be supplemented by a 1,000,000 gallon per day desalination plant nearing completion) and all homes at Maravia use photovoltaic solar panels to capture the sun's energy for electrical power.

December 18, 2008 marked another milestone in the growth of Maravia as the first road for Subdivision II was begun. For more photos of this event, please click here.

Water makes the desert bloom

Water does indeed make the desert bloom! However, as everyone who lives in Baja Sur knows, water is a precious resource, so much so that Maravia Country Club Estates has invested in a 1,000,000 gallon per day desalination plant, currently under construction, to supplement its existing wells. In order to conserve this precious resource while at the same time providing beautiful landscaping for the development, Maravia's designers are utilizing native plants which require minimal amounts of water to flourish, as well as efficient irrigation systems that make the most of every drop of this liquid gold. For those not familiar with native desert flora, it may come as a surprise how colorful the desert can be. We have posted two photos here showing some of the landscaping already completed at Maravia, with many more examples on our website. Maravia has found that balance between nature and development, making the Tecolote Beach project one of the greenest around. Homes are powered by the sun, fresh water is processed from the sea, and landscaping, including that on the upcoming 18 hole Championship Golf Course, has minimal impact on the environment.

Desalination plant "Mission"

Mexico's Mission Trail stretches the entire length of the Baja peninsula. There are four Missions located in the La Paz area, the largest in the City of La Paz, just a few blocks from the Malecon. In that tradition, Maravia Country Club Estates is honoring these historic structures with the construction of the 1,000,000 gallon per day desalination plant.

The exterior of the plant building is in the process of being "aged" with hand-applied stucco mix and straw. In addition, "exposed" bricks are being crafted into the
outside walls to reinforce the historic charm. Going inside, one will see a totally modern facility with steel girders now in place and ready for installation of the roof.

The "Mission" is quite visible from the Sea of Cortez. Look closely and you can see ond of the ocean-going Baja ferries framed by some of the many cactus trees surrounding the building.

Wal-Mart, Sam's Club Opens on schedule

Although Thanksgiving is not a traditional holiday in Mexico, as it is in the United States, the crowd that turned out for the opening of Wal-Mart's SuperCenter and Sam's Club certainly made the day LOOK like a holiday. In fact, we'd guess that many retail centers in the US would have been envious of the nearly full parking lot as both stores opened, one day ahead of schedule. Also included in the complex is a VIPs restaurant (casual dining, somewhat akin to Applebee's or Denny's). Additional stores are apparently planned for the future in a large space between the Sam's and Wal-Mart. It appeared that, on opening day, November 27, the entire population of La Paz made the trip to the center, located just past the Welcome Arch and Whale's Tail that greets visitors arriving from the airport. Watching the loaded carts carrying everything from groceries to big screen televisions leaving both stores, our bet is that the day was a resounding success for the center.
